Starting Your Seeds

Most seeds are surprisingly easy to grow; after all, seeds come pre-programmed and ready to grow.

We recommend starting seeds indoors where moisture, temperature and light can be controlled. Doing so will greatly increase the success of germination and contribute to happier, healthier seedlings.

  1. Begin with clean cell packs or flats lightly packed with a sterile, soil-less potting mix. Sow seeds according to packet instructions. Water the seeds using a misting hand-sprayer.
  2. Cover the cell packs or flats with a clear humidity dome or plastic wrap to preserve moisture. Flip the humidity dome or plastic wrap daily to prevent excessive moisture buildup.
  3. Maintain a constant temperature between 60°F and 80°F. You may want to use an electric seed propagation mat to keep soil warm and to maximize seed germination. Keep soil moist, but not wet, using a misting hand-sprayer.
  4. Provide 10-14 hours of light per day, preferably from a full-spectrum fluorescent lamp placed as closely as possible to the cell packs or flats. Never place cell packs or flats in direct sunlight.
  5. Once the seedlings emerge, remove the humidity dome or plastic wrap, but continue watering with a misting hand-sprayer.
  6. When a couple sets of true leaves have appeared, the seedlings are ready for transplanting. All seedlings require a transition period, or hardening off period, to adjust to the conditions outside. Gradually introduce the seedlings to the cooler and warmer temperatures and sunlight outdoors. Begin with filtered sunlight in a protected area. Over the next few days, gradually move the seedlings to the final transplant location, slowly exposing them to wider temperature ranges and increased sunlight.

Always refer to seed packet instructions for specific growing requirements.

Growing from seed is an enjoyable, economical way to create or expand your garden and landscape. If you can give seeds a nurturing, protected environment, they will soon give back by blossoming into wonderful additions to your garden.

Enjoy!
